Camera App Hack Puts Millions of Android Phones At Risk

A serious Google camera app hack was discovered by Checkmarx researchers which allowed access to the camera and allowed it to capture video and sound from Android phones even if the screen was turned off. Researchers created a proof of concept weather app and notified Google in July. Samsung confirmed its phones were affected in August. Google also rolled out an update to the Play Store in July. Security updates have rolled out or are rolling out to Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 3 handsets, Samsung, and other Android phone partners. In all over 300,000,000 phones were affected.
This storage permission hack allowed retrieval of stored photo and video, recording of voice calls, and GPS metadata even if the victim’s phone is locked, the screen is off and during voice calls.
