Deepfake Film Depicts Nixon's Never Delivered Moon Disaster Speech And Why Deepfakes Can Be Powerful Disinformation Tools

In 1969, July 16–24, the US successfully sent Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to the moon. Michael Collins flew the Command Module Columbia and remained in orbit while Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module on the moon. Armstrong, the first down the ladder, stepped on the moon and said ,"That’s one small step for man “one giant leap for mankind.” There was always the possibility that what turned out to be a great step forward might have ended tragically. President Nixon had a backup speech he was prepared to deliver had the mission ended in disaster for the two astronauts attempting to landing. Thankfully, Nixon did not have to deliver the sad speech while people all over this blue marble watched it live on TV. Now you can watch the speech that was never delivered – as a deepfake film. The potential power of deepfakes for political disinformation and misinformation campaigns are obvious. Are we prepared to deal with really good deepfakes and misinformation campaigns that are coming? Discuss it here.

On September 29, the Emmy for interactive documentary went to ‘In Event of Moon Disaster’, a film that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create a fake video featuring former US President Richard Nixon. The film shows him delivering a speech that was prepared in case the Apollo 11 mission failed, leaving astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to die on the moon.

The multimedia project was created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Advanced Virtuality, with a bit of help from a Ukrainian voice-cloning startup, Respeecher, which worked on Nixon’s voice.

We are woefully unprepared. Too many people are already fooled by fake stories with either nothing to back them up or only doctored photos to lend credibility. Once there are really good deepfakes delivering the misinformation, facts and truth will truly be things of the past. :fearful:
