A new email extortion scam is making the rounds, threatening that someone has planted bombs within the recipient’s building that will be detonated unless a hefty bitcoin ransom is paid by the end of the business day.
Sadly, this event marks a new low even for scammers. Many schools and government offices have mandatory policies for lockdown. Fortunately, police departments across the country reported that the threat was “not credible” and no bombs were found. Many officials flagged the emails as spam and sent out emails to staff that the emails were, in fact, spam and not likely credible threats. Still in many cases organizations chose to evacuate until everything was confirmed safe. And police departments responded to be on the safe side.
This marks a new low on the ethics level for scammers. With this kind of event, it’s likely that law enforcement will be all over this. Hopefully, they will track down and ultimately arrest the culprit(s) no matter where they are found. When you make threats to human life you’ve gone beyond all boundaries and deserve to be behind bars.
