Microsoft urged International governments to use their legal hammer to knock down cybercriminals targeting healthcare organizations seeking to get access to vaccine intellectual property as well as ransomware attacks aimed at healthcare facilities during a pandemic. Microsoft called out nation-states who use spear phishing with (Covid-19 themes masquerading as World Health Organization) to target the healthcare sector and the governments including Russia who protect ransomware gangs.
“Microsoft is calling on the world’s leaders to affirm that international law protects health care facilities and to take action to enforce the law. We believe the law should be enforced not just when attacks originate from government agencies but also when they originate from criminal groups that governments enable to operate – or even facilitate – within their borders. This is criminal activity that cannot be tolerated.”
Healthcare orgs should innoculate their users against these threats through regular simulated phishing training and new school security awareness training.
