[SCAM] Site Offers Jobs to Veterans and Installs RAT With Download

What morals? Is it possible to reach new lows for scammers? Nah. They thrive on phishing humans who want to help others after disasters so it’s completely logical they would bait veterans to download malware. Bleeping Computer reported today about a new scam web site that offers job opportunities for U.S. veterans. The site, “Hire Military Heroes”, offers a desktop app that is supposed to help veterans find jobs. Instead, the download discovered by researchers at security company ESET, believes that Tortoiseshell is the group behind this. Tortoiseshell has also been associated with recent attacks on Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Mideast. Bleeping Computer has the rest of the story. —“This is just the latest actions by Tortoiseshell. Previous research showed that the actor was behind an attacker on an IT provider in Saudi Arabia. For this campaign Talos tracked, Tortoiseshell used the same backdoor that it has in the past, showing that they are relying on some of the same tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs).” Is this a Nation State? Unknown at this point. But motivation for targeting veterans and installing a RAT to phone home makes you wonder. Targeting still active veterans for access to DOD computers?
