[TECH TALK] Got an Android Phone from 2017? Some Models Will no Longer Get Security Updates

Do you have an older phone? Are you willing to shell out a grand every two years to stay secure?

Smart phones are not cheap anymore. Samsung latest crop will run you close to $1500.00. Some of the not SO older phones will no longer get Android security updates. If you happen to be unlucky enough to own a phone that’s pre Android 8 like Motorola X, Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 and Sony Xperia Z2 you are at risk according to a new study. Don’t like being forced into a shelling out big bucks and then cut off from security updates on a device that’s only a few years old? .

“More than one billion Android devices at risk of malware threats. Over 40% of Android users may no longer be receiving important security updates, potentially putting them at risk of malware, data loss and cyber attacks”

The Verge also noted the large lag in the time it take to get updates by Samsung and Huawei.
" Six months after release, only one manufacturer managed to get half of its portfolio updated, and only two managed over a quarter. A full year after release, only three managed to break the 50 percent mark! And the two most important and largest manufacturers — Samsung and Huawei — ended up at around 30 and 40 percent, respectively."
